2 Up, 2 Down On Three Straight Wins

After a really busy weekend in the AHL for the Toronto Marlies against divisional opponents, the Marlies were left with a record of 3-0-0-0 and have managed to close the gap by 2 points with 3rd place Hamilton, and increased their lead against the Syracuse Crunch by 2 points after their Wednesday night loss put them within 3 points.

The weekend started on Friday night in Rochester where Andrew Martens and Jay Rosehill scored their first Marlies goals, along with goals by Foster and Bates Battaglia. The Marlies, who took the game 4-2 got off on the right foot this weekend for their return home to the Ricoh Coliseum to take on the Monsters and the Moose.

Saturday’s Marlies game pitted them against the Lake Erie Monsters who lost the night before in Syracuse. In what was a really close fought battle, the deadly Tlusty, Battaglia, Stapleton line slayed the Monsters at 4:12 in OT to take the game 2-1.

On Sunday, the Marlies faced their toughest opponent of the weekend, the league-leading Manitoba Moose. The Moose came off a 1-1 series on Friday and Saturday at Copps vs. the Bulldogs and were looking to pull out a winning road trip on Sunday. Unfortunately, the Marlies had other plans!

The game got off to a great start with a fight between Foster and Desbiens after a monster of a hit by the Marlies player right in front of the team bench. The Marlies started the pencilling on the score sheet with a goal by Ryan Hamilton just before the first intermission.

Michael Grabner tied the game up early in the second, but Giliati got his fifth of the season after a controversial goal where the puck was snapped just on the inside of the top bar and sprung back out of the net. It counted though and was a great goal on a great shot. Williams scored the insurance goal in the third for the Marlies to take the game 3-1.

This week, the Marlies have a 3-game stint, with games on Friday and Saturday in Grand Rapids, returning home on Sunday to face the San Antonio Rampage. It should be a great week ahead!

The Marlies took a 2-1 advantage into the second intermission.
Toronto went ahead 3-1, after Jeremy Williams capitalized on the power play scoring his 23rd of the season. Battaglia set up Williams for his 16th power play tally of the season, moving him into third place in the AHL in power play goals.

The Marlies held on for the victory, improving their record to 35-26-2-5. Tim Stapleton was held off the score sheet, snapping his five-game point streak. Justin Pogge turned away 21 shots, earning his 23rd win of the season.

Mirasty Gets 1-Game Suspension for Battaglia Shot to the Head

Light sentence: Syracuse Crunch brawler Jon Mirasty was suspended for just one game after firing the puck at — and hitting — the head of Marlies winger Bates Battaglia during warmups on Wednesday.

"I don't think it's fair to our player," Marlies coach Greg Gilbert said. "He almost gets hit in the temple and the guy gets a slap on the wrist."

Stapleton’s OT Winner Powers Marlies Past Monsters

(TORONTO) – Tim Stapleton’s overtime winner propelled the Toronto Marlies to a 2-1 victory over the Lake Erie Monsters in front of 3,507 at Ricoh Coliseum on Saturday afternoon.

Duco opened the scoring on the power play late in the first period when the puck deflected to Duco with a wide open net, to tap it behind Justin Pogge for the 1-0 lead. Marlies Weekend Preview By Steve Robinson

This week the Marlies lost a huge game in Syracuse against the Crunch 3-1 on Wednesday.

The Crunch are now just 3 points back of the Marlies for 4th place, which makes the 3 games this weekend all huge games. Let's start with Friday night the Marlies are in Rochester to play the Americans.

ROCHESTER AMERICANS
Rochester is a bad team and are currently last in the North Division. The Marlies won easily last time they went to Rochester 6-1. However the team must remember that the night before that victory the teams went at it in Toronto and Rochester won. I'm sure that the boys know that and are also aware that the Crunch are right behind.

Every game is huge at this point in the year so they need the win here.

LAKE ERIE MONSTERS
Saturday the Marlies will be back home and hosting Lake Erie. This is also a team that is lower in the standings than the Marlies and a team we need to beat. The Monsters, like Rochester, have shared some success against the Marlies this year so once again the Marlies need to be on there game.

MANITOBA MOOSE
Sunday is another home date this time with Manitoba. A huge game here as this could be the Marlies first round opponent in the playoffs. The Marlies have had pretty good success against the Moose who are about 20 points aheas of the Marlies in the standings and the current division leaders. This should be another good game and another critical 2 points at stake.

The Marlies need at least 4 points this weekend and hopefully some Hamilton and especially Syracuse losses.

This should be a great weekend

GO MARLIES GO!!!

More Clear Day Analysis By AHL Fan and DDP Crew Member Steve Robinson

The Toronto Marlies have been rather busy off the ice this week. Since the NHL trade line and injuries to the Leafs and Marlies have depleted the Marlies roster they have added a few players.

Deleted from Roster
D Richard Petiot to Tampa Bay (NHL)
D Anton Stralman to LEAFS
D Phil Oreskovic to LEAFS
F Tyler Doig returned to Reading (ECHL)

Added to Roster
D Andy Rodgers from Tampa Bay (NHL)
D Jeremy Swanson signed to PTO
D Andrew Martins signed to PTO
F Ashton Rome on loan from San Jose (NHL)
F Jay Rosehill from Norfolk (AHL)

The Marlies also signed defensemen Josh Engel and Joey Ryan to Standard player contracts from there current Professional Try Out contracts.

Toronto Marlies Clear Day List
(Players Eligible for playoffs, unless emergency callup required)

Goalies- Justin Pogge, Adam Munro
Defense- Josh Engel, Jonas Frogren, Phil Oreskovice, Todd Perry, Joe Ryan, Jamie Sifers, Anton Stralman, Juha Uotila
Forwards- Bates Battaglia, Darryl Boyce, Andre Deveaux, Alex Foster, Ryan Hamilton, Ryan Hollweg, Nikolai Kulemin, Ben Ondrus, Kyle Rogers, Tim Stapleton, Juri Tlusty, Jeremy Williams

Notable names not on list: Kris Newbury, Stefano Gilati

The Marlies look like they will finish in 4th place. Although there is a chance that the Marlies could move up to 3rd, anything higher seems unlikely at this point in the season.

However, the roster that they have named for the playoffs is a much stronger lineup then we have seen all season. Since it is highly unlikely that the Leafs will make the playoffs the Marlies are able to add some Leafs to the roster which will make it much stronger.

I'm really looking forward to seeing what Kulemin can do down here as we have seen him for a game or so this year. Now, we will get to see him really play during the entire playoff run.

The defense looks to be strong for the playoffs too with Stralman and Oreskovic back for the playoffs and Frogren down here come playoff time.

This team may surprise some during the playoffs. I'm not saying that we will win the Calder but I'm not betting against that possibility either.

Marlies Get Crunched In Syracuse

March 12, 2009
Marlies Lead On Playoff Spot Cut To Three Points

(SYRACUSE, NY) – The playoff race in the North division just got tighter.
Nikita Filatov’s goal in the second period would be the game winner as the Marlies dropped a 3-1 decision in Syracuse on Wednesday night. The loss shrunk Toronto’s lead to 3 points over the Crunch.

Maksym Mayorov and Alexandre Picard had the other Syracuse goals while Tim Stapleton scored the loan Toronto goal.

Mayorov opened the scoring in the first period after Tom Sestito sent a pass from the side of the net through the top of the crease to Mayorov who snapped a one-timer. Justin Pogge got most of the shot, but not enough as it snuck through his pads for the opening goal.

Filatov increased the lead in the second period when he raced down the right wing, and slipped the puck past Pogge on the short side.

Toronto finally solved Kevin Lalande midway through the third period, when Jaime Sifers sent a long up ice pass to Bates Battaglia at the Crunch blue line. He carried the puck in the zone, and then dropped a pass back for Stapleton, who used the traffic heading to the net as a screen, and beat Lalande on the high glove.

The Marlies tried for the equalizer with the empty net, but lost the puck behind their own goal, as Picard tucked the puck in to seal the game.

Lalande made 32 saves for the win, while Pogge stopped 18 shots in the loss. Toronto was 0 for 5 on the power play, while Syracuse was 0 for 6.

Toronto heads to Rochester to face the Amerks on Friday night.

The Marlies jumped back into the game less than three minutes later on the power play when Tim Stapleton found the loose puck in front of the Hershey goal and scored his 19th of the season. Tlusty and Marlies Drop Bruins 6-4

(TORONTO) – The Toronto Marlies used a six-point night from red-hot Jiri Tlusty to defeat the Providence Bruins 6-4 on Wednesday night in front of 2,530 fans at Ricoh Coliseum. Tlusty’s six points (two goals, four assists) set a Marlies single game franchise high.

The Marlies opened the scoring with a tick-tack-toe play from their top line of Bates Battaglia, Jiri Tlusty and Tim Stapleton. Battaglia finessed a cross-ice pass to Stapleton who fired the puck on goal; after hitting a Bruin player in front of the goal, the puck went off Tlusty and past Providence starting goalie Tuukka Rask.

Providence was able to tie the game up at 1-1 before the first intermission with a goal from Mikko Lehtonen that beat Marlies starter Justin Pogge.

Stapleton ripped a slapshot past Rask on a Marlies power play to put Toronto back in front 2-1. Tlusty gained the Providence zone and passed it off to Stapleton who fired it home. Jeremy Williams collected the secondary assist on the goal.

Providence was awarded a penalty shot 7:11 into the second period. Martin St. Pierre took the shot and was denied by the blocker of Pogge. The Bruins would tie the game at 2-2 on a power play goal from Lehtonen who tallied his second of the game. The goal was debated by the Marlies as the puck caromed off Lehtonen’s leg and past Pogge.

Jaime Sifers fired a shot from the blueline that Tlusty tipped past a screened Rask to make it 3-2 Marlies. The goal was Tlusty’s second of the night and 23rd of the season. Battaglia picked up the other assist, giving him 82 helpers as a Marlie, moving into second place on the all-time assist list.

After the Bruins tied it at 3-3, Stralman and Williams each scored power play goals in just over five minutes apart mid-way through the third period.

Stapleton added a late insurance goal to cap a four-point night (two goals, two assists) in his first game since being reassigned by the Maple Leafs.

In four out of the past five games, Tlusty has registered at least two points or more. Battaglia registered four assists tonight and Williams had a goal and a helper.

The Marlies travel to Hamilton on Friday night (7:30 pm) and on Sunday afternoon (4:00 pm) to take on the Bulldogs. Toronto hosts the Hershey Bears this Saturday at Ricoh Coliseum with puck drop scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
