Marlies Take on Hamilton in Pre-Season Game at General Motors Centre

Jeff Jackson, General Manager of the Toronto Marlies, announced today that the club will play an exhibition game against their division-rivals, the Hamilton Bulldogs – AHL affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens – at General Motors Centre in Oshawa, Ontario on Wednesday, September 30 at 7:00 p.m.

Tickets for the Marlies/Bulldogs game in Oshawa will go on-sale on Friday, June 26 beginning at 10 a.m. Tickets are available at General Motors Centre Box Office by phone at 1-877-436-8811 or online at www.generalmotorscentre.com. Individual tickets can be purchased for as low as $15 and family 4-packs are only $55.

Marlies Re-Sign Joe Ryan and Josh Engel

Jeff Jackson, General Manager of the Toronto Marlies, announced today that the club has exercised the club options on the American Hockey League contracts of defencemen Joey Ryan and Josh Engel for the upcoming 2009-10 season.

Ryan, 21, appeared in 36 games with the Toronto Marlies last season, collecting 12 points (three goals, nine assists) with 42 penalty minutes. The 6’1, 204-pound native of Stoneham, Massachusetts also played in four playoff games for the Marlies in 2009, recording zero points and a plus-one rating.

Engel, 24, appeared in 28 games with the Marlies during the 2008-09 regular season, notching one goal and fours assists with 20 penalty minutes and a plus-eight rating. The 6’3, 203-pound rearguard from Rice Lake, Wisconsin native skated in three postseason games with the Marlies in the 2009 Calder Cup playoffs, registering one assist.

Marlies Begin Pre-Season in Edinburgh

Maple Leafs Affiliate Begin Pre-Season at Scotland’s ‘Ice Hockey Homecoming’ Tournament
Jeff Jackson, General Manager of the Toronto Marlies, announced today that the club will begin their pre-season in Scotland’s ‘Ice Hockey Homecoming’ tournament in Edinburgh, Scotland from Thursday, September 24 through Sunday, September 27 at the Festival of Ice Hockey. The Marlies opponents will include their QEW-rivals, the Hamilton Bulldogs (AHL affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens), the Belfast Giants and the Edinburgh Capitals, Scotland’s only Elite League hockey club.

The four team tournament begins on Thursday, September 24 with a battle between the Marlies and Bulldogs at Murrayfield Ice Rink in Edinburgh at 2:00 p.m. (ET).
The Marlies play the Edinburgh Capitals on Saturday, September 26 in their semi-final game at 7:30 a.m. (ET). The championship game will be played between the two winning teams from Saturday’s games and will take place on Sunday, September 27 at 12:30 p.m. (ET). The winning team on Sunday will take home the Gardiner Cup. The third and fourth place teams will play in a consolation final on Sunday morning.

“The Marlies are thrilled to participate in Scotland’s ‘Ice Hockey Homecoming’ Tournament and to compete for the Gardiner Cup,” said Jeff Jackson. “This will be a terrific hockey and life experience for our players and we’re honoured to be a part of this unique event. We are looking forward to a competitive tournament and showcasing a number of our NHL prospects to the hockey fans in Scotland.”

The Gardiner Cup celebrates the life of Charles ‘Chuck’ Gardiner. He attained NHL stardom with the Chicago Blackhawks where he guarded the net from 1927-1934 and helped lead the Blackhawks to their first Stanley Cup victory. Gardiner was the first Scot to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1945.

Marlies Make Coaching Changes

Brian Burke, president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Friday that the club will not renew the contract of Toronto Marlies head coach Greg Gilbert. Marlies assistant coaches Joe Paterson and Jim Hughes have been given permission to pursue other opportunities.


“Greg has been a valuable and loyal member of our organization,” said Burke. “We appreciate the dedication of the Marlies’ coaching staff and we wish them well in their future endeavours.”
Greg Gilbert completed his third season behind the bench with the Marlies in 2008-09. Prior to joining the Marlies, Gilbert coached the Worcester IceCats (AHL), the Calgary Flames and the Mississauga IceDogs (OHL).
