Joey MacDonald’s 19 Saves and Ryan Hamilton’s Two-Goal Night Paves Way to Victory

(TORONTO) – In his first game back after being reassigned by the Toronto Maple Leafs, Joey MacDonald recorded his first shutout of the season as he blanked the Adirondack Phantoms by a score of 3-0.

Marlies forwards Ryan Hamilton and Mike Zigomanis each had multi-point nights as they continued their strong play for the blue and white.

The Marlies opened the scoring mid-way through the first period after Hamilton notched his third goal of the season. Hamilton’s persistence paid off as he picked up his own rebound, and beat Phantoms goaltender Nic Riopel. Zigomanis tallied his first of two assists on the night on Hamilton’s goal.

Juraj Mikus gave the Marlies a 2-0 lead at 15:12 of the first period. Mikus was left all alone in front and fired a wrist shot top shelf past the Phantoms netminder. Victor Stalberg, playing in his first Toronto Marlies game this season picked up an assist on the goal. Zigomanis collected the other assist on the goal.

Zigomanis is currently riding a four game point streak, three of them being multi-point games. He’s skated in four games with the Marlies after spending the 2008-2009 season with the Pittsburgh Penguins where he played in 22 regular season games.

The Marlies who have been averaging 39 shots against them over their past three games managed to hold the Phantoms to only four shots in the first period, and only 19 in the game.

Both teams were held off the score sheet in the second period.

When leading after two periods, the Marlies improved their record to 3-1-1-0 on Friday night.

Hamilton picked up his second tally of the night, and his third in the last two games to put Toronto ahead 3-0 in the third period. Greg Scott feathered a pass to Hamilton in the slot and beat Riopel to record his fourth of the season.

Scott’s assist was his first career American Hockey League point. Scott led the Seattle Thunderbirds of the WHL in goals, assists and points last season.

Joey MacDonald was perfect on the night as he turned away all 19 shots that he faced. It was his second win, in his second game of the season and was also named the game’s third star.

The Marlies are back in action this Sunday at Ricoh Coliseum at 4:00 p.m. when they take on the W-B/Scranton Penguins.
