Marlies Thump the Edinburgh Capitals, 6-1 on Saturday afternoon

(Edinburgh, Scotland) – The Toronto Marlies easily defeated the Edinburgh Capitals 6-1 on Saturday afternoon and will now advance to the finals on Sunday for the Gardiner Cup.

The Capitals started the game strong; breaking in on Marlies starting goalie Beau Erickson 10 seconds into the game but weren’t able to get the puck past him.

After failing on two consecutive power plays in the first period, including a 5-on-3 advantage, Alex Berry was able to beat Capitals starting netminder Cody Rudkowsky. Berry took a Phil Oreskovic pass and snapped it by Rudkowsky to score the Marlies’ first goal of the preseason.

Andre Deveaux and Ryan Hamilton capitalized on a 2-on-1 late in the first period to give the Marlies a 2-0 lead at the first intermission.

Ben Ondrus opened the second period with slap shot that beat Rudkowsky on his glove hand side. Hamilton and Richard Greenop both assisted on Ondrus’ goal.

Alex Foster finished a beautiful tic-tac-toe play mid-way through the second period to put Toronto ahead 4-0. Hamilton broke into the Capitals zone, passed the puck cross ice to Deveaux who found Foster wide open on the other side of the net.

Edinburgh forward Simon Lambert ended Erickson’s shutout on a breakaway late in the second period.

The Marlies dominated the play in the first and second periods; out-shooting their opponents 30-10.

Foster and Dale Mitchell each added third period goals for the Marlies.

Hamilton finished the game with three assists and Oreskovic recorded two helpers.

The Marlies are back in action tomorrow at the Murrayfield Arena on Sunday at 12:30 pm (ET) with a tilt against the winner of the Hamilton Bulldogs / Belfast Giants game.
