Stapleton Sets Marlies Franchise Record With Four Goals

(TORONTO) – The Toronto Marlies ended a brief two-game losing streak by defeating the Grand Rapids Griffins, 10-5 on Sunday afternoon in front of 3,825 fans at Ricoh Coliseum. Tim Stapleton led the way for the Marlies, scoring his first career AHL hat-trick and Jiri Tlusty chipped in with four assists. Andre Deveaux also scored his second hat-trick of the season in the victory. The 10 Toronto goals set a Marlies single game franchise-high.

The Griffins opened the scoring five minutes into the game with a goal from Francis Lemieux.
Less than a minute later Andre Deveaux tied the game with a wrist shot that deflected past Griffins starting goalie Daniel Larsson. It was Deveaux’s first goal since returning from his stint with the Maple Leafs and first since November 8. Ryan Hamilton and Alex Foster both picked up assists on Deveaux’s seventh of the season. Hamilton’s assist was his first point in a Marlies uniform.

Tim Stapleton scored three first period goals to record his first career AHL hat-trick. All three goals were scored in a span of four minutes and forty seconds. Alex Foster notched a goal in between Stapleton’s second and third goals to break up the natural hat-trick.

Tim Stapleton extended his point’s streak to four games and now has 10 points (seven goals, three assists). Hamilton finished the first period with two assists, with Deveaux and Tlusty each collecting two points in the first frame.

The two teams combined for seven goals on 20 shots after one period of play with the Marlies leading 5-2.

Toronto didn’t let up, getting tallies from Foster, Deveaux and Anton Stralman to open the second period. Deveaux and Stralman’s goals both came on a five-minute power play.
Griffins forward Justin Abdelkader added a late second period marker.
Grand Rapids cut into the Marlies lead mid-way through the third period with two power play goals to make the game 8-5.

Stapleton scored his fourth of the night on a power play late in the game to give the Marlies a 9-5 advantage.

Deveaux registered his second hat-trick of the season with under a minute remaining in the game on the power play.

Hamilton, Deveaux, Stapleton, Joey Ryan, Foster, Jaime Sifers, Stralman and Tlusty all had multi-point games.

Sunday's Boxscores
TORONTO 10, GRAND RAPIDS 5

Toronto set an AHL season high with 10 goals on Sunday afternoon in a 10-5 win over visiting Grand Rapids at Ricoh Coliseum. Reigning Reebok/AHL Player of the Week Tim Stapleton registered the league’s fourth four-goal effort of the season for the Marlies, while Andre Deveaux tallied a hat trick and added an assist.

Stapleton had only scored nine goals all season before Sunday's contest but leads the Marlies with 46 points (13-33-46) in 44 games.

Alex Foster recorded two goals and an assist for the Marlies, and defenseman Anton Stralman (1-1-2) rounded out the offense.

Jiri Tlusty (0-4-4), AHL All-Star Jaime Sifers (0-3-3), Joe Ryan (0-2-2), and Ryan Hamilton (0-2-2) each posted multiple assists in the victory, which halted Toronto’s losing skid at two games.

The Marlies scored five times in the opening period, three in the second frame, and two in the third period to rack up the most goals in an AHL game since Syracuse also scored 10 on Apr. 6, 2008.

Toronto goaltender Justin Pogge earned the victory with 28 saves, improving his season record to 17-14-4.

Francis Lemieux tallied two goals and an assist for the Griffins, who received a goal and a helper apiece from Justin Abdelkader and Darren Haydar. Grand Rapids has now lost consecutive games in regulation for the first time since Nov. 16-18.
