Marlies Begin Season With Thrilling Shootout Victory

(TORONTO) – The Toronto Marlies kicked off the 2009-10 season with a comeback victory over their division rivals, the Hamilton Bulldogs, 3-2 on Sunday afternoon in front of 4,362 fans at Ricoh Coliseum. The Toronto Marlies kicked off the 2009-10 season with a comeback victory over their division rivals, the Hamilton Bulldogs, 3-2 on Sunday afternoon in front of 4,362 fans at Ricoh Coliseum.

After dropping three preseason games to the Bulldogs, the Marlies were able to defeat Hamilton when it mattered the most to begin their season.

The first period started with a tremendous stick save by Marlies netminder Joey MacDonald. Bulldogs forward J.T. Wyman received a cross-ice pass and fired it on goal, but MacDonald slid across his crease and made the save with his stick.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring late in the first period on a goal by Wyman, but the Marlies responded just 14 seconds later.

Kyle Rogers received a pass from Alex Berry and fired a shot past Bulldogs starting goalie Curtis Sanford to tie the game at 1-1. Darryl Boyce picked up the second assist on the play.
Hamilton took advantage of a 4-on-3 opportunity when Brock Trotter roofed a wrist shot past MacDonald mid-way through the second period.

MacDonald made a blocker save on a Shawn Belle breakaway 10 seconds after the Trotter goal to keep the game at 2-1.

Ben Ondrus tied the game at 2-2 when he tipped a shot from Alex Berry past Sanford at the 12 minute mark of the third period. Brennan Evans picked up the other assist on the play, his first point in a Marlies uniform.

An exciting, but scoreless overtime put the game into a shootout where Jiri Tlusty opened the scoring, roofing the puck over Bulldogs’ goalie Curtis Sanford. Foster finished the game in the fifth round with a wrist shot.

MacDonald was named the game’s second star for his game-changing saves.
The Marlies host the Grand Rapids Griffins this Saturday afternoon at Ricoh Coliseum with puck drop scheduled for 3:00 p.m.

ICE CHIPS: Nine players made their Marlies debut on Sunday afternoon…Alex Foster and Brennan Evans were the two assistant captains; Ben Ondrus began his third season as the captain…Montreal Canadiens prospect, P.K. Subban made his AHL debut for the Bulldogs…The Marlies hosted ‘Hockey For All’ during the game, which fans had the chance to meet and greet with Leafs alumni and skate on the ice after the game.
