The Toronto Marlies used a late third period goal from Andre Deveaux to beat the Grand Rapids Griffins, 3-2 on Saturday afternoon in front of 1,786 fans at Ricoh Coliseum. Former Marlies forward Jeremy Williams scored the game’s opening goal 13 minutes into the first period to make it 1-0. Williams broke down the right wing and fired a puck past Marlies starting goalie James Reimer on his blocker-side. The goal was Williams’ 100th as a professional.

Doug Janik made it 2-0 with a shot from the point with under a second remaining in the opening frame.

Jiri Tlusty took advantage of a Marlies power play, scoring his first of the season and cutting the lead to 2-1. Tlusty was left wide-open in front of Grand Rapids starting goalie Daniel Larsson and connected for Toronto’s first power play goal of the year. Carl Gunnarsson and Christian Hanson both picked up their first career AHL points on Tlusty’s goal.

Juraj Mikus scored his first career AHL goal to tie the game at 2-2 with 19 seconds left in the second period. Mikus fired a shot from the point that beat a screened Larsson. Hanson and Brendan Mikkelson collected assists on the play. Mikkelson’s assist was his first point as a member of the Marlies.

The Marlies had a chance on a 5-on-3 power play to take the lead, but failed to capitalize on the opportunity mid-way through the third period.

After controlling play for much of the third period, James Reimer was called into action with four minutes left to play, making several big saves in the closing minutes of the game to keep the Marlies in it.

During the final eight minutes of the game, the Marlies were outshot 11-2 by the Griffins but were able to capitalize on one of the few chances they were able to generate late in the third period. Driving down the left wing, Jiri Tlusty slid a pass across the goal-mouth where it was tipped in by Andre Deveaux streaking down the centre of the ice with just under 30 seconds left to play. The Marlies finish their three-game homestand when they host the Rockford IceHogs tomorrow afternoon at Ricoh Coliseum with puck-drop scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
