Marlies Double-Up on Amerks in Rochester

Martens First AHL Goal Is Game Winner For Toronto
(ROCHESTER, NY) – It was a night of firsts for the Marlies and they earned two points while they were at it.

Andrew Martens scored his first AHL goal with two minutes left in the second period as the Marlies doubled the Americans in Rochester 4-2 on Friday night.

Jay Rosehill, Bates Battaglia and Alex Foster had the other Toronto goals. Michael Duco and Karl Stewart responded for Rochester.

Duco opened the scoring on the power play late in the first period when the puck deflected to Duco with a wide open net, to tap it behind Justin Pogge for the 1-0 lead. The Marlies responded 13 seconds later, when Rosehill jammed a puck through the pads of Mike Brodeur, after tipping a pass from the corner. It was his first goal with the Marlies, and followed his first fight in the blue and white, after a tilt with Riley Emmerson. Battaglia gave Toronto a 2-1 lead in the dying seconds of the opening period on the power play.

The only goal of the second period came with two minutes remaining as when Tim Stapleton and Jiri Tlusty teamed up for a nice passing play before sending the puck in front to Martens, who deflected a shot over the shoulder of Brodeur.

Stewart closed the lead to 3-2 early in the third on a turnover in the Marlies zone, but Foster would seal the game scoring an empty net goal in the final minute.

Pogge stopped 21 shots for the win, while Brodeur blocked 20 in the loss. Toronto was 1 for 5 on the power play while Rochester was 1 for 3.
