Penalty Free Game Sees Marlies Drop One Goal Affair

(GRAND RAPIDS, MI) - The Marlies managed to pull out a very tough feat for the second time in franchise history, but were unable to secure a point.

Toronto native Darren Haydar scored the game winning goal in the empty net with a minute left in the third as the Marlies lost for the second consecutive night in Grand Rapids, this time by a 3-2 margin.

Haydar, Ryan Oulahen and Ville Leino scored for Grand Rapids, while Jiri Tlusty and Bates Battaglia had the Toronto goals.

Daniel Larsson made 24 saves for the win, while Adam Munro was outstanding making 35 stops in the loss.

Battaglia scored with 20 seconds left in the third to cut the lead to 3-1, but the Marlies were unable to get the tying goal.

Referee Jeff Smith called a penalty free game. It was a franchise first for Grand Rapids, but the second for Toronto. The last penalty free game in the AHL was on March 20, 2008 when Toronto hosted Lake Erie. Bob Langdon was the official that game.

Toronto hosts San Antonio at 4pm on Sunday.
