Marlies Earn Point In Eight Round Shootout Loss

(GRAND RAPIDS, MI) – At this time of year, every point counts and the Marlies will take what they can.

After battling through a tie game and exciting overtime, Evan McGrath would score the winning goal in the eighth round of the shootout as the Marlies dropped a 2-1 decision in the front end of back to back games in Grand Rapids.

Darren McCarty scored the Griffins goal, while Jeremy Williams had the Marlies marker.

Both goaltenders were solid in the game with Jimmy Howard stopping 24 shots for the win, while Justin Pogge made 34 saves in the game.
McCarty opened the scoring early in the second period, as he scooped up the puck on the goal line beside Pogge, and made an excellent back hand shot under the cross bar.

Williams tied the game for Toronto with a two man advantage in the third period, when he fired a one-time shot past Howard from the face-off circle.

In the shootout, Tim Stapleton and Jiri Tlusty scored for the Marlies while Ville Leino, Darren Haydar and McGrath netted goals.

Howard and Pogge were named the first and second stars of the game.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night in Grand Rapids at 7pm.
